Regrettably, 2021 was a bad year for all of us. 2020 ended in disappointment as another dream on the Bruce Peninsula went sour. I had a property up there that I was getting ready to build a log cabin on but due to the pandemic (in part), I ended up selling at the last minute as costs were starting to soar significantly.

I spent the remainder of 2020 scouring northern properties, but there were few to be had that were affordable – certainly nothing water front. As the pandemic worsened, I was convinced I would never see a recreational property ever again in my lifetime. But I kept searching, I had alerts setup on any and every kind of site that sold real estate. Then, about a week before Christmas…

I found this island property. But wait – it’s a real long drive and I don’t have a boat. It’s got a hydro service? And a Septic System? And Running water and baseboard heaters? This sounds too good to be true (oh yeah, and it’s mostly affordable). So almost 8 private acres and 2200 feet of waterfront? Are you kidding me? But it is far to drive and my partner, well she might not like those drives. Ok, I’m going to see it.

Wait, it’s an Island and it’s winter – I can’t go see it now… Now what?? I know, I’ll drive by the area. Did that on the weekend but couldn’t get nowhere near the island, but the area’s nice. So I arrange with the listing agent, and put an offer in ‘sight unseen’ (not recommended) with one condition (recommended): that I get to inspect the property. Low and behold – it was accepted! That was Christmas Eve 2020.. Now I had to get there to inspect it in order to waive my condition.

The next three weeks were a flurry of preparing for a x-Country ski trip across a frozen lake and onto an island I only had GPS coordinates for, up in Northern Ontario in the middle of winter. Now this was exciting!

The rest of the sale is history, and the rest of the adventure begins now!
